First NK-64 Router Taken By STAR Group, Hong Kong
|
“The design is revolutionary”, said Joe Talia, Codan Broadcast’s R&D Manager. “The very simple design of the switching core optimises signal paths and provides better response than chipsets and designs used previously. Another feature is that unlike most products on the market there is no central CPU. Processing is distributed throughout the product, including the control panels.”
As a result of the design the NK’s functionality is not compromised but its size and price are both much lower than previous generation products.
I/O cards are simply added as required to a 3RU frame. The frame houses the routing core and provides communication services to control panels and other devices, such as the Internet Protocol Server. The IPS provides easy configuration and monitoring of routers and other interface products using a web browser. By adding I/O cards the router can be configured from 8x8 up to 72x72 and anywhere in between, including non-square configurations.
The first unit off the production line, configured as a 64x16, went to STAR Group in Hong Kong.
STAR Group has an unmanned Disaster Recovery (DR) site that has channels running in parallel with the main transmission centre in Hunghom (HH). Apart from taking over the transmission during disaster, the DR site has a few optical fibre circuits that carry the baseband signals from DR to HH to backup the automation system in case of failure or scheduled maintenance.
The NK64 router sits in the DR site and is remotely controlled by HH. Through the router, the HH side can monitor individual channel playouts and select the required program channels to HH for backup via the fibres.
